Vegoose Music Festival (Las Vegas) 10.27.07

What a weekend! My friends and I traveled to Sin City this past weekend to go to the 3rd annual Vegoose Music Festival. My crew is hardcore make no mistake. Most of us got no real sleep for 2 days straight. But what you would expect in a city filled with casinos, clubs, bars, strip clubs, drugs, alcohol, 100 different buffets, 20 different Cirque de Soliel shows, and 1 big music festival to keep you preoccupied. Viva Las Vegas man! Viva Las Vegas! (Oh snap, do u guys remember when they played that Elvis song right before Daft Punk performed? That was fuckin' awesome...hehe). Anyways, here are the pics below from our adventure in the Neveda desert. Enjoy! And a big shout out to the crew: Erin, Michelle, Leslie, Mai, Allison, Colby, Dustin, Roger, Cat and her crew (even though I didn't see you guys once, but you were there with me in spirit...haha) Stephanie, Eunice, Roberta, Lorenzo, Jayvon, and Chris.

Las Vegas Is A Monster!

My friends and I survived another weekend in Las Vegas. No sleep for two days! Spent at least 3 bills or more most of it on trippers and lap dances...haha. Also listening to great music at the Vegoose Music Festival by the Shins, M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, and Daft Punk. Good times! Will post pics and videos later this week when I fully recover.

Some Funny Commentary On The Malibu Fires

Well, if you didn't know already, there has been raging brush fires all around Southern California since Saturday. From L.A. County, Orange County, San Bernandino County, Riverside County, to San Diego County fires have destroyed homes and structures. Officials estimate that the damages are close to $1 billion which is fuckin' insane. Anyways, Pepperdine University is located in Malibu where one huge brush fire was raging. Here's a video below of two Pepperdine students (who sound like straight stoners) commentate on the fires at Pepperdine University. Personally, I was hoping the campus would burn down in flames because I went to Loyola Marymount University the arch rival of Pepperdine...haha.

VEGOOSE IS ALMOST HERE: 5 More Days Til Vegas Baby!

Awww...you can almost taste it in the air. Ooh...you can almost smell it too. Yes, the Vegoose Music Festival in Las Vegas in almost upon us people. This weekend is going to be insane. My friends and I pumped up for this one. Even though the festival is 2 days, my friends and I are only going to day 1 on Saturday. Then we have the after parties which range from the Daft Punk/Ed Bangers after-party at LAX, to the Empire Balroom where Jayvon is spinning, and of course the strip clubs like Crazyhorse, but no Seamless because stippers there suck! Anyways, I hope to see you everybody in Vegas this weekend rockin' out and partying their asses off...peace!

30 Days of Night Arrives In Theatres Today

Based on the popular graphic novel of the same name, 30 Days of Night makes it's way to the big screen today. The premise of the film is that vampires (who are harmed by the sun) move to Barrow, Alaska, and terrorize the area. An excellent concept for a novel and a film, I've been looking forward to seeing this movie after reading excerpts from the graphic novel, seeing the cool teaser posters around L.A., and watching the trailer. I also found out that the director David Slade was also directed the indie movie Hard Candy which I recommend everyone should watch. So I figured 30 Days of Night is going to be a kick ass movie. However, early reviews of the film (courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter and the Daily Variety) has been moderate to bad. One HR critic gave the filmmakers kudos for the keeping the story line close enough to graphic novel. But as the critic conveys "...dramatically, the film is a shambles, with whiplash-inducing lurches in tone and pacing that make it seem as if portions were edited out of sequence." Somewhat discouraging, but none the less one woman's opinion. Well, I'm going to have to judge for myself when I see the film, and so should you too. For more info click on the pic above.

[adult swim] Hip Hop Tour @ UCLA Tomorrow Night

I love [adult swim] on the Cartoon Network. Not just because of the great anime and original cartoon shorts they air, but because they understand hip hop. The program and music directors at the network always air a great selection of hip hop during the commercials for their [adult swim] ads. And it always amazes me when they use Jay Dilla, Madlib, Danger Mouse, Talik Tweli, and dozens of other artists whom I call "real" hip hop artists. So it's no shock to me that they're having an [adult swim] hip hop tour featuring Ghostface Killah and Witch Doctor. The tour stops in Los Angeles tomorrow night Oct. 16 at UCLA. Unfortunately, the show is only for UCLA students. Yeah, it's more of a college tour. But if you're a UCLA student and a fan of hip hop I wouldn't miss this FREE SHOW for students.

Portishead Update

After a ten year hiatus, Portishead is putting the finishing touches of their third LP. Sources from Pitchfork (the article on Pitchfork's site is under the Mos Def article) convey that band member Geoff Barrow said the album is close to the finally stages. I'm predicting the album will not come out til early next year, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Rumors have been flying around for 8 years of a new Portishead album with no results. However, this information is more legit...god I hope it is! I recommend buying Portishead's only two albums Dummy and the self-titled Portishead. It's worth every penny. Click on the album cover above to go their website.

The Boondocks Is Back!

After a year and a half on hiatus, the Boondocks are back with their second season on the Cartoon Network's late night program [adult swim] on Monday nights at 11 PM (pacific time). One of the best animated shows on television next to the Simpsons and the Family Guy, the Boondocks conveys humor though African-American stereotypes and pop-cultural references. This animated show is a great spin-off from the comic strip that centers around two brothers, Huey and Riley, who moved from the Southside of Chicago to their Grampa's house in the suburbs. I highly recommend watching this season of the Boondocks, and watch the first season on DVD. You will not be disappointed. For more info on the Boondocks click on the pic above.

Below is a trailer of Season 2. Enjoy!

Bonde do Role - With Lasers

Yeah, this album has been out for a minute, but it's still new to a lot people. Bonde do Role's With Lasers is one of my favorite albums of the year. Before I go into more detail on the album, I want to convey my first real introduction of the band. Last year I was following the work M.I.A. and Diplo. Through Diplo, I discovered Bonde do Role's Myspace music page. When I first heard Melo do Tabaco and Melo do Vitiligo I was completely drawn to this refreshing blend of Portuguese rap over baile funk, hip hop, rock, and electro beats. When Diplo went on tour with CSS and Bonde do Role, I went to the show mostly to hear Diplo spin for the first time. However, Bonde do Role was the freshes act I have ever seen in a long time. Even the though sound was horrible at the venue, their music and stage performance still blew me away. When I saw them again with Diplo with a better sound system, I was completely hooked.

With Lasers is an excellent party album. It's the perfect fusion of hip hop, rock, Miami bass, Latin, and electro beats. This album is a must have. Their shows is a must see. Here's a cool little performace of Bonde do Role in Orlando, FL back in March.

The Go! Team - Proof of the Youth

Released last month on the indie label Sub Pop, the Go! Team's new album Proof of the Youth is not a far stretch from their first album. Their sophomore album is a continuation of Thunder, Lightning, Strike with the formulaic sampling of dozens upon dozens of songs from the 70s and 80s. Blending genres like Funk, R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Disco, the band's producer Ian Parton maintains the same old school sound with a new school vibe within the beats and arrangements. Where the album lacks in studio production, the band definitely makes up for it with their live performances. If you're looking for a fun time, I recommend going to see the Go! Team live at the Echo Plex this Sunday, Oct. 21. This prep-squard cheerleading rock band with have you singing, dancing, and jumping up. Click on the pic above to the visit the band's website.

BPM Party @ the Roxy 10.2.07

Celebrating their 10 year anniversary of their debut album VEGAS, Southern California's own Crystal Method came to party at the Roxy with the help of BPM magazine. Unfortunately, I was hoping they play a decent DJ set, but they failed miserably at that. To their credit, this act is not known for their DJ sets. They are a LIVE electronica duo and they should just playing live. It's also unfortunate when the opening acts are better than the main attraction. Le Castlevania and L.A. Riots played awesome sets. When CM came on it was like "umm, what the fuck just happened?" I left the Roxy like 15 minutes into their set. Overall, it was still a fun party like most BPM parties are. Just never go see Crystal Method doing a DJ set ever. It's better to go see them LIVE instead.

Oktoberfest at Alpine Village

Tis the season to get drunk and merry at Alpine Village for the annual Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest originally takes place during a three-week festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany during late September and early October. It is one of the most famous events in the city and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year. But somehow the festival has managed to migrate to Alpine Village in Torrance, California of all place. Well thank god cause those Germans know how to make some damn good beer dude. I can't read German, but it looks cool right. Anyways, the festival ends Oct. 28 so let's hit it up before it's all over. For more info on Oktoberfest at Alpine Village click on the pic above.

Cream de la Cream @ the Standard (Downtown) 9.30.07

Sucka Free Sundays at the Standard (Downtown). This spot can definitely burn a hole in your pocket, especially if you're broke, so beware. However, when you're having a good time with your friends it's the last thing on your mind. The last few pics are from a Korean bar-b-q joint in K-Town. I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant. It was really good.

Bonde do Role @ the Echo Plex 9.29.07

After the Neighborhood Festival, Jennifer and I were real troopers. Faded and tired from drinking all day, we went to the Echo Plex not knowing if you were going to get in or even make it to see Bonde do Role perform. If you never seen Bonde do Role before, you have to see these crazy kids from Brazilian get down. They're so much fun to watch on stage. The event was free and we only waited in for like 6 to 8 minutes. Unfortunately, Bonde do Role already had started, but we didn't miss too much. Coming from Neighborhood Festival as well, Spankrock, Amanda Blank, and Flosstradamus joined the Brazilians on stage and performed too. The audience was outta control, which is normal for a Bonde do Role show. I took a few pics of the craziness above and shot a video too. The clearity of the video isn't that great, but you can definitely hear how crazy it was there.

Neighborhood Festival 9.29.07

The pictures speak for themselves. This event was every hipsters wet dream...haha. The location of the event (a dirt/grass lot in Exposition Park) was disappointing, but we still had a good time. Oh wait, we could of had an even better time if the drinks weren't overpriced and watered down...ugh!!! Damn you Steve Aoki - you son of bitch!!!

Here's a direct link to the pictures above via Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/ashton.turner/NeighborhoodFestivalAndCheckYoPonytailTheEchoPlex

Opps, but I almost forgot about the video I shot at the festival. Check out the footage of Flosstradamus and Kid Sister's set.

BREAKING NEWS! 2nd Justice Show Added @ the Henry Fonda on Monday, Oct. 8th

Simian Mobile Disco and Boys Noize @ the Echo Plex 9.22.07

Who got electro fever!?!? I got electro fever...haha!!! Electro music is all I seem to listen to these days. I can't get enough it. My friends and I saw a pretty damn good performance of Simian Mobile Disco and Boyz Noize last month. They were both good and worth checking out. I didn't take any pictures at this event oddly enough, but I did shoot some cool videos of Simian Mobile Disco performance. Check it out...

AIR @ the Greek Theatre 9.21.07

Of all the days for it to rain in Los Angeles, it rains on the day AIR was performing at the Greek Theatre which is an outdoor venue. It hasn't rain in a year and it rains on that day. I was really excited to see them performed because I missed them at Coachella earlier this year. I didn't miss them on purpose too. They were actually 45 minutes behind schedule, but I got tired of waiting and went to see the Teddybears (who kicked ass and are playing at the L.A. Weekly Detour Music Festival today). Luckily, the rain stopped before AIR performed. Even though it was wet and damped at the Greek we still had a great. I took a few pics, but it wasn't worth putting into a SLIDE. If you want to see the pics from that evening, just click on the pic of my friend Erin with her luscious pink lips...hehe. =)

Underworld @ the Hollywood Bowl 9.9.07

I waited 10 years to see Underworld perform live, and it was worth the wait. Underworld's performance was incredible. The atmosphere at the Bowl was pure bliss. You could feel the euphoria in the air. Everyone were dancing on their chairs, benches, or in the aisles. I swear there is a little raver in all of us, and it was truly evident that night. From the older generation to the newer generation of ravers, they all got to hear one of the best electronica acts from that era. Go see Underworld if you even get the chance. You will not be disappointed. Hopefully, my other favorite electronica duo Orbital will get back together and tour the U.S. in the future as well.

Giant @ The Vanguard featuring Kaskade and James Holden 9.8.07

"Another killing on the dancefloor!" - MSTRKRFT

There's nothing like some good ol' fashion clubbing with your friends. Especially with my girls Erin and Michelle. Erin + Michelle + Ashton = a deadly combination on the dancefloor...just remember that! Spinning at Giant that evening was the king of bubble gum house music Kaskade and the maverick of progressive house music James Holden. Both DJs were great that night. I'm in and out of the club scene for awhile, but it's cool to go just to run into your club friends from the past. Anyways, enjoy the pics!

NoHo Scene Arts Festival TODAY

If you live in the Valley, and god forbid you do, I recommend checking out the NoHo Scene Art Festival today. The event is FREE (except for the performances) and starts at 11 am and ends at 10 PM. They'll be showcasing a mixure of of theater, dance, music, film and art. I have to admit there's cool art movement happening in North Hollywood that Angelenos should experience. Hit up Skinny's Loung on Lankershim Blvd. too for drinks in the evening. Click on the pic to the left for more info.
